Thomas Jefcoate in Later Life

Birth

Thomas was born on the 21st of August in 1839, in Potterspury, Northamptonshire, England, to parents Thomas Jefcoate and Hannah Jefcoate (née Warner).1

Marriage

On the 26th of December 1859, Thomas married Janet J. Oliver in St. Giles, Middlesex, England.2 Janet was a native of Langholm, Scotland.3

Emigration to New Zealand

Together, Thomas and Janet emigrated to New Zealand in January of 1865 on the ship the Eastern Empire, which docked in Lyttelton, New Zealand. The ship records show Thomas’ occupation listed as a ‘Labourer’.4 5 6 Thomas and Janet first settled in Christchurch for four years before moving to Timaru in 1868, where they purchased Prospect Farm in Pareora, and lived there for 22 years.3

The Eastern Empire was a three-masted sailing ship of 1014’/993t, built in 1857

Children

Together, Thomas and Janet went on to have nine children (Note that spelling errors in the records have the spelling of Janet’s first name jumping around a bit: Janet, Jennet, or Jennett, so some further research may help confirming that these are indeed all her children - but her obituary states that she had nine, so I’m pretty sure this is correct). They gave their first two children middle names that depicted where they were born - but then I guess the rest would all have been ‘New Zealand’ or ‘Christchurch’ so they dropped that tradition pretty quickly:

  • Thomas Eastern Empire Jefcoate was born in 1865 on the ship Eastern Empire from which he was given his middle names.7 Thomas was educated at the Pareora school.8 On Tuesday, the 16th of June, 1891, Thomas married Emily Jane Merry, the third daughter of Mr. John Merry.9 Together, Thomas and his wife Emily had five children: Laura Oliver Jefcoate, born 1892;10 Ivy Amelia Jefcoate, born 1893;11 Ellen Janet Jefcoate, born 1894;12 Cyril Frederick Raeburn Jefcoate, born 1896;13 and Alma Hazel Doreen Jefcoate, born 1900.14 After farming in Pareora for many years, Thomas became head buyer for the New Zealand Refrigerating Company at Wanganui, a position he held until his death.8 Thomas Eastern Empire Jefcoate passed away in Wanganui in 1896 at the age of 69.15
  • Charlotte “Lottie” New Zealand Jefcoate, was born on the 29th of June in 1866.16 In 1884, Charlotte married William Plummer Johnson,17 and together they had four children: Thomas William James Johnson, born in 1885;18 Helen Janet Johnson, born in 1887;19 May Oliver Johnson, born in 1890;20 and Lenard Archibald Johnson, born in 1892.21 Sadly, Charlotte passed away in 1913, at the age of 48.22
  • Helen Jefcoate was born in 1868.23 In 1889, Helen married James Archibald Valentine,24 and together they had ~6 kids (these need some confirmation): Archibald Graham Valentine, born in 1893;25 James Jefcoate Valentine, born in 1895;26 Janet Koanui Valentine, born in 1898;27 Hilda Mary Florence Valentine, born in 1900;28 William Maxwell Valentine, born in 1903;29 and Helen Charlotte Valentine, born in 1905.30 Helen passed away in 1937 at the age of 69.31
  • Janet Oliver Jefcoate was born in 1869.32 In 1894, Janet married Andrew Thomas Drake,33 and together they had two children: Thomas Drake, born in 189434 and Olive Drake, born in 1900.35 Janet passed away in 1944, at the age of 74.36
  • Henry John Jefcoate was born in 1871.33 In 1896, Henry married Jessie Dalgleish Robison,34 and together they had three children: Margaret Myril Jefcoate, born in 1898;35 Harold Oliver Jefcoate, born in 1900;36 and Jenie Agnes Ruth Jefcoate, born in 1903.37 Henry passed away in 1954, at the age of 85.38
  • Frederick William Jefcoate was born in 1872.39 In 1905, Frederick married Elizabeth Denniston Shaw Stevenson,40 and together they had three children: Lillian Jefcoate, born in 1905;41 Thomas Frederick Jefcoate, born in 1907;42 and Eric William Jefcoate, born in 1909.43 Frederick passed away in 1954, at the age of 82.44
  • Lucy Jane Jefcoate was born on the 24th of October in 1874.45 In 1897, Lucy married William Julian Bardsley,46 and together they had three children: Ernest Milton Bardsley, born in 1898;47 Winifred Jefcoate Bardsley, born in 1900;48 and Kathrena Rosalind Bardsley, born in 1906.49 Lucy passed away in 1958, at the age of 82.50

Spreydon Baptist Church

In the UK Thomas and Janet had been members of the Rugby Baptist Chapel, and when they settled in Spreydon, the closest Baptist Church was in the centre of Christchurch ( The Christchurch Baptist Church on Lichfield Street). This meant that they had two walk for two hours every Sunday just to worship in their chosen faith. Thomas had a vision to start a church in the Spreydon area, so he approached Charlotte Twigger, a local farmer’s wife who said he could have the use of a 16 x 12 foot sod house standing in a 50 acre tussock paddock in Wright’s Road, near Lincoln Road. So he began a milk run to raise money for the new work and on the 17th September, 1865, the first service was held in the sod house which apparently was filled with men, women, and children. A year later a church was formed with six initial members, Thomas and Janet Jefcaote, W. W. and Mary Ann Davey, Richard Plots Pole, and Charlotte Twigger. The group decided to build a 24 x 20 foot chapel, sod-house and this was opened debt free on the 7th of April 1867. Thomas served as the first deacon of the church in October, 1868.64 65

Later, after moving to Pareora, Thomas continued his enthusiasm for supporting his community. Thomas served on the Pareora School Committee. 66 Thomas also regularly attended community meetings for householders and meetings about the local church.67

Forgery Case in the Supreme Court

In June of 1878, Thomas was involved in a forgery case, in which it seems as though he was a victim of cheque doctoring by William Corlett, who doctored a cheque for £2 and 5 shillings to £22 and 5 shillings. Corlett was eventually sentenced to four years’ penal servitude.68

Accident

On the 11th of October in 1880 a report of Thomas’ successful treatment of weak-sight by a Dr. Wilkins was written in the Timaru Herald.69 Despite this newly improved eyesight, two days later reports were published regarding an accident involving a steam-powered circular saw in which Thomas lost two fingers and a thumb.70

Leaving Pareora

In 1891, Thomas and his wife sold their farm in Pareora and travelled back to the Old Country and the Australian Colonies for around 6 months.3 It seems as though he was touring the Old Country advocating for the New Zealand colony, and encouraged farmers to sell up and join him in the colony! He returned home strong in his conviction that “there is no place on earth like New Zealand”.71

Thomas & Janet Travel Back to the Old Country - Lyttelton Times, 23 December 1891

Upon their return to New Zealand in 1892, they settled in Southland, buying a 1024 acre farm known as the Oteramika Grange.72 They stayed here for about 7 years until ill health compelled them to retire the farm and move closer to their children.3

Death of Wife

Thomas’ wife Janet sadly passed away on the 5th of October in 1900, at the age of 63, at her daughter Lucy’s residence in Wellington.73 74 3 By all accounts Janet’s death was quite unexpected, 3 days after her death her husband and son (Thomas & Thomas) were reported as travelling north to Lucy’s residence in Wellington.75

To The Editor …

After Janet’s death, it seems as though Thomas may have been lacking people to talk to, as he started writing a large number of letters to the Editor at his local newspapers.76 Some in support of prohibition, most seem to be in defense of Burnham Industrial School (which sounds like a disciplinary institution for boys), some in support of resting on the Sabbath, and about a year before his death he wrote a lovely piece reminiscing about the early years, settling in New Zealand.

Death

Thomas passed away on the 1st of October in 1913 in Christchurch Hospital, Canterbury, New Zealand. He had been suffering from cystitis for the previous 3 months, following a prostatectomy, and ultimately succumbed to toxaemia.77 78 79

In Thomas’ Will, he requested to be buried alongside his beloved wife Janet, with the following inscription added to the tombstone: “We shall sleep but not forever. There will be a glorious dawn. We shall meet to part no never on the resurrection morn.” Thomas asked that his grandsons be given some of his belongings - namely his pocket watches, rings etc., specifying that his gold wedding band (engraved ‘Tom’) should go to his grandson Thomas Frederick Jefcoate (eldest son of Frederick William Jefcoate).80
