N.B. I couldn’t fit all of Jane’s grandchildren on the above tree plot - so I’ve added her to my list of ancestors to build a ‘Descendant Family Tree’ for - I just need to do a bit more research on her children first!
Birth & Emigration to New Zealand
Jane Donnelly was born on the 11th of August in 1869 in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia, to parents James Donnelly and Kate Campbell Donnelly (née King).1 Her parents had emigrated to Australia from Ireland: Jane’s mother Kate came from Ballycraigie in Northern Ireland and Jane’s father James came from Rockcorry, in the Republic of Ireland. James and Kate met and married in Australia in the goldfields of Bendigo where they started their family before moving to Naseby, Otago, New Zealand, where they settled and continued their family.
Marriage & Children
Jane married Robert Paisley on the 13th of July in 1881 in Naseby, Otago.2 The wedding, performed by the Reverend J. McCosh, was announced in the Mount Ida Chronicle on the 16th of July.3 Robert came to New Zealand from Paisley (near Glasgow), in Scotland.
Together, Jane and Robert had ten children:
- Elizabeth King Paisley born in 1884.6 Elizabeth King Paisley married William Marshall Beattie in 1914,7 and together they had a daughter named Hazel Jane Beattie in 1914.8 Elizabeth King Beattie died in 1966 at the age of 82.9
- Kate Campbell Paisley born on the 22nd of October in 1886.10 In 1910 Kate Campbell Paisley married John Hore Jnr,11 and together they had six children: a child whose name was not recorded in 1910;12 a son named Robert Launcelot Hore, born in 1911;13 a son named Albert James Hore, born in 1913;14 a son named John Hore, born in 1915;15 a daughter named Iris Jane Hore, born in 1916;16 and another daughter named Doris Florence, born in 1920.17 Kate Campbell Hore died in 1973 at the age of 87.18
- Margaret Brown Paisley born in 1889.19 In 1915, Margaret Brown Paisley married William Henry Graham,20 and together they had a son named Barton Alexander Robert Graham, born in 1919.21 Margaret Brown Graham passed away in 1956 at the age of 67.22
- Robert Johnston Paisley born in 1891, and appears to have died in Ypres, Belgium in the War in 1917.23
- Jane May Paisley born in 1893.24 Jane May Paisley’s name shifts from May Jane Paisley to Jane May Paisley throughout her records - I wonder if this is because they named her Jane May Paisley - but as her mother’s name is also Jane she went by her middle name May, so as to not confuse the two? I’m not sure but will continue to look into it. In 1921, May Jane Paisley married Edward George Tyree,25 and together they had two children: a son named Robert William Tyree, born in 1922,26 and a son named Edward Tyree, born in 1925, who sadly died in infancy at 6 months old.27 May Jane Tyree died on the 2nd of April in 1959 in New Plymouth, New Zealand.
- Alicia Eleanor Paisley born in 1898.30 In 1927, Alicia Eleanor Paisley married Cuthbert Paul.31 Alicia Eleanor Paul died in 1966 at the age of 68.32
- Ruby Winifred Paisley born on the 2nd of December in 1900.33 In 1920, Ruby Winifred Paisley married Armour Beattie.34 Ruby Winifred Beattie passed away in 2003 at the age of 103.
- Mildred Agnes Paisley born on the 24th of May in 1904.35 In 1931, Mildred Agnes Paisley married Gavin Wilson Davidson Little.36 Mildred Agnes Little died on the 8th of March in 1982, at the age of 78.37
Death
Jane Paisley died on the 3rd of February in 1912 at the age of 54 38 from a combination of shock and burns received when her clothing accidentally caught fire while she was attending a bonfire in her back yard 39:
